Let's Learn Music Theory Together!

"Amazingly knowledgeable, professional, creative, and caring teacher! [...] Shuli uses an individualized education approach & assesses the type of learning style her student is. If something needs work or rethinking, she'll keep rethinking until it helps her student reach goals! [...] Since starting with Shuli, my son's violin teacher & I noticed improvements. I have only amazing feedback!"

"Shuli has helped me immensely in improving my musicianship skills. It is not easy for an academic to teach their expertise to someone who is an adult beginner, but Shuli does it exceptionally well. She teaches music in a way that I am able to grasp easily and she is extremely patient when I am learning a new concept."

Are you looking to improve your sight-singing or ear-training?

Are you a budding composer or songwriter seeking guidance and insights?

Perhaps you'd enjoy some free infographics about modes and gestures?

Or maybe you just really love over-analyzing Disney songs?

Learning music theory should be fun, personal, meaningful, and fascinating. Not a strict, boring regimen. If you're reading this website, then you probably know it's not enough to study a textbook. To become truly "fluent" in any skill or body of knowledge – to develop such an experienced ear, feeling, and mind for a subject that it feels totally natural – we need to unleash our inner curiosity.

When working with students, I view my job primarily as that of a guide. I help my students explore their own passions and goals. I empower them to ask questions and think independently. I'm particularly keen on navigating my students through the vast and amazing world of FREE online resources and communities. And yes, we do discuss lots of "rules" and "regulations" – but rules are more like conventions, and they're often deeply rooted in specific historical and cultural contexts.

I teach private students through an online platform called Tutor Ocean. It gives us access not only to video chat, but also to a digital whiteboard, screen-sharing, and file-transfer. If desired, sessions can be automatically recorded and saved for the student to review. And Tutor Ocean handles all scheduling and payment directly, which makes the logistics extremely easy.

My standard rates are $50/hour for individual students and $40/hour/person for a group. Lessons can be 30, 45, or 60 minutes long. I also offer flexible rates for students who can't afford the standard rates - it's such a shame when finances prevent curious people from learning!

So what are you waiting for? Schedule your FREE 30-minute consultation with me by filling out the form below. I can't wait to hear what you're interested in learning. :-)

(p.s. remember what I said about over-analyzing Disney songs? If that's your jam, check out my free blog at DisneyMusicTheory.com!)

(p.p.s. and if you'd like a free copy of my PhD dissertation on the Russian-Jewish composer and violinist Joseph Achron [1886-1943], I'd be delighted to share it with you!)
